Leo.MV: Online learning assessment in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

LEO.MV is a collaborative project between the Institute for Quality Development at the Ministry of Education and Culture of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the Center for Empirical Educational Research (zepf) at the University of Koblenz-Landau.

The aim of the project is to develop a tool for improving the assessment of learning outcomes after the transition from fourth to fifth grade, to establish it in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and to evaluate this process. The tool is intended exclusively for use by teachers in schools and serves no other purpose than to provide a learning group-related overview of basic skills in mathematics, German, and English at this point in time.

The test is tailored to the practical teaching needs of schools in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is closely aligned with the competencies and content specified in the framework plans for the respective subject. It refers to the educational standards of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK).

The test is administered exclusively online, requiring no correction effort on the part of teachers. Further work with the results is supported by teaching materials and the provision of additional tasks for the classroom, differentiated according to the needs of strong students and the support required by weaker students. The tool is used in mathematics and German classes in schools in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It has been expanded to include self-assessment by students and corresponding feedback to them. In addition, pilot testing of the test in English has been underway since the beginning of August 2021.

The findings of an initial evaluation of the tests in mathematics and German show a positive attitude among participating teachers and give reason to hope that the tool can make a positive contribution to targeted teaching development tailored to the needs of learners.
